File Extension WP

The file extension WP is associated with the Corel WordPerfect word processing application. WordPerfect is an older word processing application originally developed for MS-DOS which was the predecessor to the Windows operating system.

The later versions of Word Perfect were developed for use with the UNIX operating system as well as Mac-based systems. The latest versions of WordPerfect are designed for use with different versions of the Windows operating system.

Corel WordPerfect performs similar functions to Microsoft Word and other word processing applications. It can be used as a standalone application or as a part of the Corel WordPerfect Office suite of productivity applications.

The file extension WP is categorized as a document file type which contains structured data, text, graphics, letterheads, and other elements to create a professional looking document. WP files are typically saved in a binary format and are usually associated with WordPerfect versions 4 through 6. For WordPerfect versions that follow version 6, the WP file uses the file extension WPD and WPS. Additionally, when the file is open and currently being edited, a temporary document will be created with the file extension WP? (with a question mark).

How to Open WP Files

Since WP files can be opened using a variety of programs and applications, double click on the file to see if it will automatically open in a default program you have installed on your PC. WP files are a text and document file type, so you may already have a program which will open the file.

The most common way to open the file extension WP is by using WordPerfect, which is a part of Corel WordPerfect Office X6 suite of productivity applications. WordPerfect Office X6 is available in both a standard and professional edition as a 30-day free trial on the Corel website. Both editions of WordPerfect Office X6 are designed for use with the Windows operating system version XP and higher.

For Mac OS X, WP files can be opened using Planamesa NeoOffice 3.3, which is a full-featured set of office productivity applications designed for use with a Mac-based device. NeoOffice 3.3 is open source and available as a free download on the NeoOffice.org website.

The file extension WP can also be converted to the file extension DOC or DOCX using Microsoft Word, which is a word processing program that is a part of the Microsoft Office Suite of productivity applications. To convert the WP file extension, open Microsoft Word and then click on File on the main toolbar of the application.

On the submenu click on Open and in the dialogue box, change the option Files of Type to All Files. This will allow you to see the WordPerfect files you have saved on your PC. Select the file you wish to convert and then click Open. Microsoft Word will go through the process of converting the file.

Once the file is converted, you can proceed to save it. Click on File on the main toolbar and then choose Save As from the drop-down menu.
