File Extension VXD

The file extension VXD is associated with Microsoft Windows and is a helper file for the Virtual Device Driver used with a variety of programs and applications in the Windows operating system. VXD files are integrated with program executable (EXE) files to add capabilities to programs and applications.

VXD files are a system file type that contains information which provides support for executable programs in Windows. This means that the file is designed to work with the program it was created for and is not a standalone file. VXD files are typically installed with Windows and with other software applications that are Windows compatible.

VXD files work in conjunction with other data in files created by various programs and applications. The executable for the programs uses the information in a VXD file to launch the application properly and to access support for specific functions of the application. The file extension VXD is also known as a Value-added Driver and should never be opened by the average PC user that lacks knowledge of this format.

How to Open VXD Files

If you have come across a VXD file on your PC or you have downloaded it from some location online, use caution when opening it, especially if you are unsure of what program or application created it. If a VXD file has become damaged or corrupt, it can contain malware that will cause damage to your PC.

If you are unsure of the origin of the file, you may be able to find the program that created it by right clicking on the file and choosing Properties from the drop-down menu. In the Properties window click on the Details tab to see if there is any information that pertains to the program associated with the file.

VXD files are typically binary files, which means they are in text format. You can use a text editor to open and view the contents of a VXD file; however, if you are unsure of what you are doing, you should avoid this. Any accidental modifications to the file can render a program or application useless.

That said in order to view the contents of a VXD file, right click on the file and then choose Open With from the drop-down menu. Choose the text editing program you want to use such as Notepad or WordPad or click on Browse if the program is not in the list. Choose the text editor and then open the file in the program to view its contents.

VXD files are only meant to be used with the programs they are designed to be integrated with. The safest and best way to open such files is by using the program that created them.
