File Extension QTL

Files that contain the QTL extension are related to Apple QuickTime media player software. QTL files are text files that point to a specific QuickTime movie file that has a MOV extension. You can find QTL files in web page links. When you click on the link, a QTL file will automatically launch QuickTime player provided the appropriate web configurations for MIME type are present.

QTL stands for QuickTime Media Link, a name which relates to the content that is contained in a QTL file which includes a link to a QuickTime movie file and its location in addition to the file’s QuickTime settings. Some of the settings contained in a QTL file are control settings for auto play, switching to full screen mode, href which identifies the URL address of the QTL file, looping controls, and other features which help you navigate a QuickTime movie.

How to Open QTL Files

A QTL file does actually contain the movie itself and references the movie files which are located on the web server. QTL files also allow you to locate MOV files, so you can download them to the hard drive on your PC.

To open a QTL file in Windows or Mac OS X, it is necessary to download and install Apple QuickTime Player. This is a free download that you can obtain from the download section on the Apple.com website. Once you have QuickTime downloaded on your PC, it should open QTL files from website links by default using the QuickTime player.

If you already have a QTL file saved on your PC, you can double-click on the file to open it using QuickTime Player. If you use the Windows operating system, it may be necessary to right click on the file and then choose Open With from the drop-down menu. On the submenu select QuickTime or, if it is not in the list, click on Browse to locate the program to open the QTL file.

It is also important to mention that you may not be able to use all of the content contained in a QTL file if you download a free version of QuickTime. By paying a little extra for QuickTime Pro you receive additional features and controls you can work with when viewing movies in QuickTime. For example, you can use the auto play element in a QTL file in QuickTime Player Pro by clicking on Export on the menu and then clicking the Movie to QuickTime Media link. In the new window you can enter the exact website URL address of the MOV file you want to view and access it directly from the website.

If for any reason you want to view the contents of a QTL file you found on your hard drive, you can open it using Notepad in Windows or TextEdit in Mac OS X. This will allow you to view the contents which will indicate where the actual MOV file is located along with the website URL address.
