Files with the file extension NRG are associated with Nero, which is authoring software for creating CD and DVD content. Nero allows you to burn content to a disk, backup and recover media, sync iTunes playlists, convert videos to another format, as well as copy files and perform video editing and playback.
NRG files contain data that is an exact duplicate of CD and DVD disks, or they can contain a series of files that can be mounted as a disk on a Mac PC. Although NRG is a proprietary format which is used by Nero software program, there are multiple applications you can use to open NRG files or convert the files to another format.
How to Open NRG Files
If you do not have Nero installed on your PC, double click on the file to see if it automatically opens in a default program. If the file was created on your PC, chances are you have the appropriate application that will open it.
If you use Windows, you can open an NRG file using H+H Software Virtual CD or EZB Systems UltraISO, which is available for download at the EZB Systems website. Other programs that will successfully open NRG files in Windows include WinMount International WinMount, Nero 11, and Lightning UK! ImgBurn. You can also use freeware such as MagicISO which will open NRG files to allow you to view the contents. MagicISO is available for download from the Magic ISO website.
For Mac OS X, you can open and view NRG files created by Nero in Roxio Toast 11 or Roxio Popcorn 4, which allow you to open and work with NRG files using a wide variety of application tools and features.
In Linux you can open NRG files using Nero Linux, which is a version of Nero specifically designed to work with the Linux operating system. You may also use Nrg1iso or Nrg2iso, which is an open source utility designed to extract data from an NRG image file that has been burned to a Nero CD-ROM.
Since NRG files create a duplicate copy of content which is burned to a CD/DVD disk, another option you can consider is converting the NRG file to another format such as ISO. ISO files are basically archive files which store copies of data included on a CD or DVD disk. There are a number of NRG to ISO conversion programs available as a free download on sites such as CNET which will convert NRG files for you. You can also use an online resource such as Zamzar which will perform free file conversion for you as long as the content is not copyright protected. Simply log onto the website, browse for the NRG file, choose the new format, enter your email address, and click on Convert. Within minutes you will receive the newly converted file in your email inbox.
