File Extension MAP

Files that contain the MAP extension are associated with more than 30 different programs and applications. The primary program which uses MAP extension is the Quake Engine in addition to OziExplorer, Halo, and Mapjects GRYD. MAP files contain data and information related to the program which created them.

If the MAP file is created by Quake Engine, it is a game file type which is used with Quake games, mainly Quake 2 and Quake 3. This type of MAP file is in a text format to enable it to be used with game editing programs.

MAP files associated with OziExplorer are a graphics and image file type that contains data related to OziExplorer maps and the AutoCAD program. The files can contain map data or image maps associated with a variety of gaming applications.

If the MAP file is created by Halo, the file is a game file type that contains data associated with combat moves and other gaming strategies. The files include objects, images, and description of the terrain used in the game setting.

MAP files created by Mapjects GRYD are data file types which are supported by AutoCAD. The files contain data related to Computer Aided Design documents which can include maps, geometric shapes, calculations, lines, and other information associated with creating maps.

How to Open MAP Files

If you are unsure about the origin of the MAP file, double click on the file to see if it will automatically open in a default application. If the MAP file was created on your PC, chances are you may have the appropriate application installed.

If the MAP file is associated with Quake Engine, you can open the file using any text editing program such as Notepad or WordPad for Windows, Apple TextEdit for Mac, or gEdit and Nano Editor for Linux. You can also use a game editor such as Valve Hammer Editor or Torque Constructor to open MAP files.

MAP files created with OziExplorer can be opened using Adobe Photoshop CS6 or Adobe Photoshop Elements. Both programs are compatible with Windows and Mac OS X and will also allow you to edit the files in addition to opening them. You can also use AutoCAD for Windows or Cmap Tools for Mac to open the file extension MAP.

If the MAP files are created with Halo and you use Windows, you can open them using Bungie Halo: Combat Evolved or Halo Map Tools. For Max OS X, you can use Bungie Halo: Combat Evolved.

MAP files created by Mapjects GRYD are server side data files. If you use Windows or Linux, you can open this type of MAP file using Mapject GRYD open source application, which is available as a free download from the GRYD website.
