File Extension IES

The file extension IES is associated with the Illumination Engineering Society of North America (IESNA), which is a professional organization of engineers who specialize in lighted environments. IESNA joins professionals with lighting knowledge together to use the knowledge to improve projects which benefit the public.

The IES file extension is categorized as a data file type which is saved in a photometric format established by the Illumination Engineering Society. The contents of an IES file include measurements for light intensity distribution for the purpose of designing lighting projects for a variety of public venues, including buildings, roadways, transportation hubs, and other public facilities.

The file extension IES stands for Illumination Engineering Society, and the IES standard photometric file format is used for the electronic transfer of photometric data and related information. The photometric data is saved as an ASCII file with each line in the file consisting of less than 132 characters in length.

How to Open IES Files

If the file extension IES was created on your PC, double click on the file to see if it will automatically open in a default application you have installed on your PC. IES files can be opened using multiple applications, so you may already have a program to open the file.

If you are using the Windows operating system, you can open IES files with Autodesk Revit Architecture 2014, which is a software application that provides tools for architectural designs and Building Information Modeling (BIM) workflows. Autodesk Revit Architecture 2014 is available in a paid version on the Autodesk Store website and is designed for use with Windows 7, Windows Server 2012, and Windows 8.

You can also opt to use Autodesk 3ds Max 2014, which is a software application that assists with workflows for crowd generation, particle animation, and perspective matching. Autodesk 3ds Max 2014 is available in a paid version on the Autodesk Store website and is designed for use with Windows 7, Windows Server 2012, and Windows 8.

LTI Optics Photopia will also open the file extension IES in Windows. Photopia is a photometric analysis software application which provides a way to create performance evaluations for non-imaging optical designs. The application also provides tools for creating computer models for testing a variety of designs without having to modify each design separately. LTI Optics Photopia is offered with a three week trial license on the LTI Optics website and is designed for use with the Windows operating system.

For Mac OS X, you can open and view the contents of the file extension IES using the online Illuminating Engineering Society IES File Viewer which is available on the Visual 3D website. All you need to do is launch your Safari web browser or other web browser and then log onto the Visual 3D website PhotoMetric Viewer page. On that page follow the onscreen instructions for opening the IES file and then view the photometric data in the web browser window.
