Files that contain an EML extension are commonly associated with Microsoft Outlook email client, but they can also be created by other email programs, including Mozilla Thunderbird, Windows Mail, Outlook Express, and a variety of other email clients.
EML file extensions are email messages which have been saved by an email client. The files can also be saved along with an email attachment or other type of file that was included with the message. EML files allow you to save email messages for storage or for forwarding at a later date.
EML files are data file types that contain text, images, signatures, hyperlinks, HTML, and other components which are commonly used when composing an email message. EML files can easily be converted to a variety of formats or opened using a number of different programs and applications.
How to Open EML Files
Since EML files can originate from a number of different email clients, double click on the file to see if it will automatically open in the default client that is associated with it. If the file was created on your PC or you happen to have the same program as the sender of the file, you may be able to save time using this method.
If you use Windows, you can open and view the contents of an EML file using Windows, Live Mail, Microsoft Outlook, or Mozilla Thunderbird. If you have an earlier version of Internet Explorer, you can open EML files with Outlook Express. You can also use IncrediMail, which is available as a free download from the relevant website.
If you have trouble opening an EML file in Windows using one of the above methods, you can open it in the Internet Explorer web browser since EML files are formatted in a similar fashion. To do this, right click on the file and choose Open With from the drop-down menu. Choose Internet Explorer from the submenu or click on Browse to locate it. You can also automatically open EML files in Internet Explorer by changing the extension from EML to MHT.
For Mac OS X, you can open EML files with Microsoft Outlook 2011, Mozilla Thunderbird, or Apple Mail. You can also use Kupon.BG Klammer, which is available for download from the App Store and will open EML files on a Mac PC. Kupon.BG Klammer also works with Mac iOS devices.
If you use the Linux operating system, you can open EML files with Mozilla Thunderbird or you can choose to convert the files to another format using a file conversion program. There is a variety of conversion programs, which are available as a free download from the CNET website.
