File Extension AMR

Files that contain the .AMR extension are associated with GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) telephony. AMR files utilize the Adaptive Multi-Rate ACELP (Algebraic Code Excited Linear Prediction) Codec. This type of technology is capable of correcting errors related to cellular interference by reducing the file compression rate for speech audio. AMR files also integrate with other codec standards for different types of cell phone systems.

AMR files were originally used to create voice memos with certain types of cell phones. When the voice memo is created, the file contains the extension AMR. Although AMR files are related to telephony, there are many audio files available on the Internet in the AMR format. Although the sound quality is not as good as other audio files, you can still open this type of file to play music or to listen to voice recordings.

How to Open AMR Files

AMR is actually an older type of file developed in 1998 and adopted as a standard code for speech telephony by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP). AMR files utilize link adaptation to choose from a number of different bit rates which are based on link conditions. For this reason, AMR files can be opened and played using a smaller variety of media players. In fact, Windows does not support AMR files, so it is necessary to use a third party application.

If you use Windows, you can open and play AMR files with Apple QuickTime Player, RealNetworks RealPlayer, or VideoLAN VLC Media Player. If you choose to convert AMR to another format, you can use the MIKSOFT Mobile Media Converter which is available as a free download from the MIKSOFT website.

To open and play AMR files on a Mac-based PC, you can use Apple QuickTime Player, RealNetworks Real Player, or VideoLAN VLC Media Player. If you want to convert AMR files to another format, you can use the MIKSOFT Mobile Media Converter as described above or any AMR file conversion program that is compatible with Mac PCs.

For the Linux operating system you can download and install VideoLAN VLC Media Player and for file conversion you can also deploy the MIKSOFT conversion program described above.

If you want to improve the audio quality of AMR files, you can try the Nokia Multimedia Player which helps to slightly improve the sound quality of this file type. If you want to edit AMR files, there are a variety of software applications such as EXPStudio Audio Editor which are available as a free download. You can also perform a search for AMR editing programs on trustworthy websites like Softpedia and CNET.
