File Extension WRI

The file extension WRI is associated with Windows Write, which is an older word processing application that was used in earlier versions of the Windows operating system. Windows Write works with Microsoft Windows version 1.0 and 2.0 as well as the 3.x series and was replaced in the mid-1990s with WordPad.

The file extension WRI is a document file type that contains text, formatting, fonts, images, and other elements used to create documents. Since the program is older, there are not as many elements included in the files as those of more modern versions of Microsoft document creation programs. Windows Write is a product of Microsoft and was created as a basic word processing application for Windows operating systems on the market prior to 1995.

How to Open WRI Files

If you use Windows and have access to Windows Write, you can open WRI files using the Write program. In most cases, documents created with Windows Write can be opened using WordPad, which is included in Windows 95 and higher. Once you open the WRI file in WordPad, you can save it as a WordPad document. Then you can use the file with a broader range of applications and operating systems.

If you use Windows, you can open WRI files with Microsoft Word, which is part of the Microsoft Office suite of applications. You can also use Microsoft Works, Corel WordPerfect Office, or OpenOffice, which is an open source suite of applications available as a free download on the OpenOffice.org website.

For Mac OS X, you can open WRI files using Microsoft Word 2011 or NeoOffice, which is a full set of office applications available as a free download on the NeoOffice website. WRI files can also be opened on a Mac PC using Apple TextEdit or TextMate.

If you use the Linux operating system, you can open WRI files with Nano Editor or gEdit, which are open source text editing programs. LibreOffice will open WRI files on Linux and is available as a free download on the LibreOffice.org website.

You can also opt to convert WRI files to another file format such as DOC, PDF or DOCX using a file conversion program. There are a variety of file conversion programs available as a free download on websites such as CNET which will convert WRI files for you.

You can also use an online resource such as Zamzar which will perform free file conversion for you as long as the content is not copyright protected. Simply log onto the website, browse for the WRI file, choose a new format, enter your email address, and click on Convert. Within minutes you will receive the newly converted file in your email inbox.
